The three Shelly Gen3 dimmers do not compete: which one is yours

Shelly has three dimmers in the Gen3 range and they do not compete with each other. Each speaks a different language to the light fitting, so the choice is almost never about budget: it is about what your installation accepts.

Shelly Dimmer Gen3: the domestic one

Dims the bulb directly, with no driver, by trailing-edge phase cutting. It takes up to 150 W of LED and 200 W of incandescent or halogen.

Its great strength is that it works without neutral, which is the typical older Spanish installation: no neutral in the switch box. It is the only one of the three that manages it. In exchange, it does not measure consumption, and under 20 W it needs a bypass.

It is yours if you want to dim dimmable 230 V bulbs in a home.

Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3: the most complete

Drives fittings with an analogue input, not bulbs. It is the only one of the three that measures consumption — voltage, current and active power — and the only one with Matter built in.

It has a relay output, and that is not decoration: with a 1-10 V driver the lowest signal leaves the light on at around 10 %, and the relay is what really turns it off. It needs neutral and a driver with Dim+ and Dim− terminals.

It is yours if the fitting has a 0-10 V driver and you want to measure what it uses.

Shelly DALI Dimmer Gen3: the gateway

Connects an existing DALI installation to the Shelly ecosystem, with its own bus power for about five drivers. Its important limit: it drives the bus by broadcast, as a single group. It does not create groups or address fittings individually, and it dims brightness, not colour temperature.

It is yours if you already have DALI fittings and want to run them from Shelly or Home Assistant.

What none of them does

None of the three dims fittings individually: all three act on everything they control. For individual control, one dimmer per circuit. And none of them makes a non-dimmable fitting dimmable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from one to another if I get it wrong?

It is not a setting: each technology needs different wiring. Check what the fitting accepts before you buy.

What about 24 V LED strips?

None of the three. Strips are dimmed by PWM and need their own controller.

Is there a DIN-rail version?

Yes: the Shelly Pro Dimmer 2PM, also phase cut, for mounting in the consumer unit.

In short

  • 230 V bulb, home, no neutral → Dimmer Gen3.
  • 0-10 V driver, and I want to measure consumption → Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3.
  • Existing DALI installation → DALI Dimmer Gen3.
  • Mounting in the consumer unit → Pro Dimmer 2PM.
