Shelly renews its range by generation, and as Gen3 and Gen4 arrive the earlier equivalents are withdrawn. It is not that yours failed: there is a newer version that does the same or more, and it nearly always fits the same box and wires the same way.
| Your model | Replacement |
|---|---|
| Shelly Plus 1 | Shelly 1 Gen4 |
| Shelly Plus Plug S | Plug S Gen3 Matter |
| Shelly Dimmer 2 | Dimmer Gen3 |
| Shelly 2.5 | 2PM Gen4 |
| Shelly RGBW2 | Plus RGBW PM |
| Shelly Plus i4 | i4 Gen3 |
| Shelly 3EM | Pro 3EM or 3EM-63 Gen3 |
| Shelly Uni | Plus Uni |
What you gain
The replacement is nearly always better: Bluetooth as standard — quick pairing, and a gateway for BLU sensors —, Zigbee and Matter on Gen4 and several Gen3 models, scripting and local control, and a faster, more secure processor. And they live alongside the old ones in the app and in Home Assistant without trouble, so you can swap a few at a time.
The four things to check first
- Neutral: 2.5 → 2PM Gen4. The 2PM Gen4 needs neutral and is not dry-contact; it gives 10 A per channel, 16 A in total, and adds per-channel metering and cover mode. The 1 Gen4, on the other hand, is dry-contact, like the Plus 1.
- Voltage: Uni → Plus Uni. The Plus Uni switches its potential-free outputs up to about 28 V DC; the Uni went to 36 V DC. If you were working near that limit, check.
- Meter with a V2C: 3EM → Pro 3EM or 3EM-63. For metering and Home Assistant, the 120 A Pro 3EM is the closest — the same clamp — and the 3EM-63 Gen3 suits smaller installations. But if your 3EM feeds a V2C Trydan’s dynamic load control, the new meters use a different API: confirm V2C compatibility before swapping.
- Bypass: Dimmer 2 → Dimmer Gen3. The Dimmer Gen3 works without neutral, like the Dimmer 2. With LEDs under about 20 W it may need a bypass, and that bypass is not the previous generation’s.
Model by model
Plus 1 → 1 Gen4
The familiar dry-contact relay, now with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter and 16 A. It keeps the dry and wet contact modes: it works just as well for a light, a garage door or a low-voltage load.
Plus Plug S → Plug S Gen3 Matter
The metering plug, now Gen3 and with Matter. In white and in black.
Dimmer 2 → Dimmer Gen3
No-neutral dimming, with trailing-edge phase cutting designed for LEDs.
2.5 → 2PM Gen4
Two channels with per-channel metering and cover mode, multi-protocol. Needs neutral. The natural replacement for the 2.5 on shutters and double circuits.
RGBW2 → Plus RGBW PM
The 12/24 V LED-strip controller with metering, with Bluetooth and scripting, and RGBW, RGB or four independent channel profiles.
Plus i4 → i4 Gen3
Four inputs to turn switches into scene triggers, in Gen3, mains-powered like the Plus i4. For DC — vehicles, boats, solar installations — there is the Plus i4 DC, 5 to 24 V DC.
3EM → Pro 3EM or 3EM-63 Gen3
The three-phase meter moves to DIN rail with Matter and Modbus in the Pro 3EM, or to Gen3 with the 3EM-63. Check V2C compatibility if you used it for dynamic load control.
Uni → Plus Uni
The do-anything module for making the dumb smart: door entry, alarms, pulse meters, sensors. The Plus Uni adds Bluetooth, scripting, voltage measurement, a pulse counter and an analogue input, and takes up to five DS18B20 probes. Check the voltage range if you worked above 28 V DC.
Do I lose my automations?
The logic survives, but the new device has to be reassigned in every scene or automation where the old one was, whether in the app or in Home Assistant.
