Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V: it dims drivers, not bulbs, and that is why it has a relay

The Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3 (model S3DM-0010WW) does not dim bulbs: it dims drivers. That distinction decides whether it is any use to you, and it is the first thing to check before buying one.

It is also the only Shelly dimmer that measures consumption, and the only one with Matter built in.

What you need for it to work

  • A dimmable LED driver with a 0-10 V or 1-10 V input. You can tell by two extra terminals, marked Dim+ and Dim−, or 1-10V. If the fitting does not have them, this device is not for it.
  • Neutral at the point of installation. Unlike the Dimmer Gen3, this one does not work without it.

For dimmable 230 V bulbs, the Shelly Dimmer Gen3 is the one. For 24 V LED strips, neither: they are dimmed by PWM, unless their power supply accepts a 0-10 V input.

Two circuits, not one

Power and control take separate paths:

  • The relay output (O) carries 230 V to the driver.
  • The Dim+ and Dim− terminals carry the 0 to 10 V control signal.

The Shelly’s Dim+ goes to the driver’s Dim+, and Dim− to Dim−: polarity matters. Inputs S1 and S2 take a switch or push-buttons, in one-button or two-button configuration.

Why the relay is not an extra

This is the detail that confuses most people. On 1-10 V, the lowest possible signal is 1 V, and that value means minimum brightness, not off: however far you turn it down, the light stays at around 10 %. On 0-10 V most drivers do switch off at 0 V, but not all of them guarantee it.

That is why it has a relay: it cuts the driver’s supply and gives a real off. A 0-10 V dimmer with no relay leaves the light on at minimum for ever.

What sets it apart

  • Consumption metering: voltage, current and active power in real time.
  • Matter built in, alongside MQTT, REST and scripting.
  • Configurable minimum and maximum brightness, to bound the driver’s usable range.
  • Night mode and schedules with transitions.
  • Works with the Shelly Plus Add-on for sensors.

If something is wrong

The light does not go fully off

Check that the relay output (O) is what feeds the driver. If the driver is wired straight to the line, bypassing the relay, you have brightness control but not on and off.

The light works backwards

Check the polarity of Dim+ and Dim−. Some drivers also let you invert the signal in their own settings.

How many drivers can I connect?

It depends on the control current each one draws and on the load the relay is rated for. Check your drivers’ datasheets, and do not size to the limit.
