Shelly has turned the wall switch into a touchscreen, and there is no longer one Wall Display but four: the original 4″, the 6.9″ X2 and X2i, and the 10.1″ XL. They look alike, but they are not interchangeable, and one detail catches a lot of people out.
What they share: all four go in a standard back box, replace a switch, have a relay and control the rest of the Shelly ecosystem. They need no hub: they join the Wi-Fi, work with the app or with Home Assistant, and act as a Bluetooth gateway for BLU sensors.
The detail: temperature and humidity
All four can show the room’s temperature and humidity, but not all of them measure it themselves:
| Screen | Temperature and humidity | |
|---|---|---|
| Wall Display | 4″ | Built-in sensors |
| X2 | 6.9″ | From the BLU H&T in the pack |
| X2i | 6.9″ | Needs a BLU H&T |
| XL | 10.1″ | Needs a BLU H&T |
According to Shelly’s own support, the X2i and the XL have no internal temperature or humidity sensor: without an external one, they cannot show either. If you want the panel to measure the room on its own, at the lowest price, the original Wall Display is the only one that does it out of the box.
What each one has
- Wall Display (4″): the compact one. 5 A relay, temperature, humidity and light sensors, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, under 1 W. For a bedroom, a hallway or a second room.
- Wall Display X2 (6.9″): the step up to a large screen, with room for six favourites, a light sensor and energy monitoring of your PM devices.
- Wall Display X2i (6.9″): the newest, on the Gen4 platform: quad-core processor, dual-band Wi-Fi 6, swappable power base — it ships with a 5 A relay base, and a two-output base is sold separately — and wake-by-gesture, no touch needed.
- Wall Display XL (10.1″): the centrepiece. 5 A / 1500 W relay, four physical buttons for control without the app, audio output over Bluetooth or Sonos, and a proximity sensor. For a living room, an entrance hall or a hotel room.
Which one fits
- Measures the room by itself, at the lowest price → Wall Display.
- A big screen without fuss → X2.
- The newest, with the most headroom → X2i.
- A centrepiece with physical buttons and audio → XL.
The XL fits a standard back box, but at 10.1″ it takes far more wall than a switch. Plan where it goes before opening the box.
