The Shelly DALI Dimmer Gen3 (S3DM-0A1WW) is sold as a DALI dimmer, and it is one — but it is worth understanding exactly which kind, because the difference decides whether it suits you. It is a gateway between the Shelly world and a DALI bus, not a full DALI controller.
What DALI is, and why it exists
DALI is a two-wire digital bus for lighting. Against the two usual alternatives:
- Phase-cut dimming: acts on the supply itself. Cheap and universal, but driver-dependent and prone to flicker.
- 0-10 V: an analogue signal needing a pair of control wires to every driver. Precise, but the wiring grows with each fitting.
- DALI: one two-wire bus that every driver hangs off, with digital communication in both directions.
That is the real advantage: across an office with twenty fittings, DALI saves an enormous amount of cable compared with 0-10 V.
The limitation to know before buying
This unit works as a single master in broadcast mode. Every command goes to the whole bus at once.
The consequence is direct: every connected driver behaves as one single group. You cannot hold the window row at 30% and the corridor at 80%. If you want them independent you need two buses and two units, or a professional DALI controller with individual addressing.
A standard DALI system does address driver by driver and handles groups. This one does not. That is not a defect, it is where the price lives — but it is exactly what people assume and are later disappointed by.
How many drivers it takes: the bus supply is the limit
The unit powers the bus itself, at 16 V and 10 mA. That is enough for about 5 drivers.
Above that you need an external bus power supply. That is no drama — it is standard DALI kit — but it is a cost and a space to allow for while sizing the installation, not something to discover once the fittings are up.
What it can and cannot do
| Yes | Intensity dimming (DT6), minimum and maximum brightness limits, schedules, scenes, night mode, one or two button inputs, voice control, Home Assistant and MQTT, and mJS scripting with no external server. |
| No | Addressing drivers individually, creating groups within the bus, or adjusting colour temperature on tunable-white fittings. |
| Never | Sharing a bus with another DALI controller. Two masters on one DALI bus is a conflict, not redundancy. |
The colour-temperature point deserves emphasis: if you have bought tunable-white fittings expecting to control them with this, you will be able to raise and lower the intensity and nothing more.
So who is it for?
It fits well where lighting is driven as one block: a meeting room, an office corridor, a retail zone. There, broadcast mode is not a limitation but exactly what you want, and the unit does that job for a fraction of what a professional DALI controller costs.
It is also the cheap way to bring an existing DALI installation into the Shelly ecosystem without redoing the wiring.
If what you have is a home with a handful of dimmable points, it is probably more than you need: a Shelly Dimmer 0-10 or a phase-cut dimmer solves the same thing with fewer parts.
The app and the console work with Gen2, Gen3 and Gen4 devices.
Installation by a qualified person. The DALI bus is low voltage, but it shares a board with mains.
